Transportation

MAT Retro BusThe Midtown area is unlike any other in Omaha. It was largely developed prior to World War II, when development patterns encouraged a mixture of uses. Midtown contains a variety of residential options and residents can work, shop, play and learn within walking distance of their homes.

“It’s so easy to commute if you live and work in Midtown,” said Jim Farho, president of the Midtown Neighborhood Association. “It’s called walking.”

If you’d rather ride, Metro Area Transit (MAT) enjoys high usage in Midtown with a variety of bus routes traversing main corridors at all times of the day and evening.

Perhaps one of the defining features of Midtown stems from its location immediately west of downtown Omaha. Crossed by numerous regional transportation routes, including Dodge Street, the dominant arterial road within the metro area, Midtown is easily traversed and navigated by residents, employees and visitors.

Vibrant communities work to ensure that traffic corridors are suitable and sustainable for pedestrians, bicyclists, cars, trucks and buses – and that the rate of traffic acts to foster the growth of the active business districts and urban neighborhoods. In 2005, Destination Midtown began an on-going partnership with the City of Omaha to address Midtown corridor issues when it commissioned HWS Consulting Group Inc. of Omaha to study several proposed transportation corridor improvements in the Destination Midtown Master Plan.
