Getting Inked in Midtown
Midtown Omaha may not be considered the ink Mecca in this country, far from it in all likelihood. But that's not to say it isn't without cutting-edge tattoo artists.
Omaha's own Grinn and Barrett at 5002 Center St. has become one of the area's most respected and recognized names in ink. Founded in 1991 as one of the city's first tattoo studios, it was purchased by artist Jen Beirola in March 2006. Under her direction, a redesign has given the studio a modern décor and edgy sense of style, along with a relaxed, comfortable environment.
"I wanted to create more of a custom shop with an artistic, gallery feel," Beirola said. "We're putting art on people, so we take the extra step to make them comfortable while we focus on our craft. We're constantly working to grow artistically while making sure our clients have a positive experience."
Beirola and her team of four artists and studio staff strive to offer clients "art you want; respect you deserve." They encourage customers to bring in their own images, or let them choose from the many designs created by the Grinn and Barrett staff.
"If a client has a vision, we work to bring it to life," Beirola said. "We also have a wall of pre-designs to offer. Our goal is to get the right design for the right person."
As tattoos and body piercings have become more mainstream over the past few years, Beirola's client mix has also changed.
"Tattooing has changed and now appeals to a wider audience," Beirola said. "Our studio is part of the transition. Unlike the seedy experiences of the past, we offer a comfortable, relaxed atmosphere where it is a privilege for us to create art that our clients will wear forever."
To accommodate the studio's growing out-of-town client base, Grinn and Barrett provides free shuttle service to and from the airport, and helps make hotel arrangements. Studio artists also travel across the country to attend body art conventions where they continue their education and create works of art for new customers.
